Lucy's
history starts with our search for a catamaran
and continues through Lucy's
delivery from France to Tortola (British Virgin
Islands). This text based history also includes
our first year of ownership, ending when we took
Lucy to the Bahamas at the end of 2007. We
stopped keeping this text based log at the end
of 2007 and started using the
Photo Gallery to tell
the story of Lucy's
travels. So check out the
Photo Gallery for pictures and stories. |

Fort
Lauderdale, Florida - June 30, 2006 |
Mike flew to Fort Lauderdale to meet with Staley
Weidman of the Catamaran Company and start
looking at catamarans. Mike spent Saturday
driving to various docks with Staley looking at
boats. The Lagoon 440 and Lagoon 500 are both
simply incredible. Carol flew down on Sunday and
we did the tour of boats again. Carol wants the
big cat. |

|
Annapolis,
Maryland - July 14, 2006 |
We flew to Annapolis to meet with the sales team
at Bay Yachts (Eric Smith and Jon Klapper) and
to attend a "Boat as Business" seminar that Eric
conducts. We wanted to attend the seminar and
look at the Fountaine Pajot catamarans. While in
the Annapolis airport, Carol and I decided that
our hearts were really into the Lagoon 380, so
we called Staley at Catamaran Company and bought
the 380. Today was the last day to get a factory
incentive package of extras that included about
$20,000 worth of optional items. |

Les Sables d'Olonne, France - Dec. 7, 2006 |
Lucy
arrived today in Les Sables d'Olonne, France
after being shipped from the factory which is
located inland in Bordeaux. She will
start her commissioning and is due to leave Les
Sable on December 20th for the delivery sail to Tortola. |

Les Sables d'Olonne, France - Dec.
28, 2006 |
Lucy is still in Les Sables
waiting for the passage of a
mid-Atlantic storm. Estimated departure
for her crossing to Tortola is Jan. 3,
2007. |

|
Les Sables d'Olonne,
France - Jan. 3, 2007 |
Lucy departed Les Sables
today
for her crossing to Tortola. |
|
|
Le Coruna, Spain - January 7, 2007 |
Lucy is currently laying over in
La Coruna (northern Spain) waiting for
better conditions after
encountering rough weather in the Bay of
Biscay. She is expected to depart La
Coruna on January 10th. |
|
|
Mid Atlantic- February 1, 2007 |
Lucy is currently about halfway
between the Canary Islands (off the
coast of Africa) and the Virgin Islands.
She has 1644 miles to go as of this
morning (8:30 AM Eastern Time). |
|
|
Nanny Cay, Tortola- February 15, 2007 |
Lucy arrived in Nanny Cay around
4:30 PM local time to the cheers of
owner Mike Glover and friend
Mike Ventura. The two Mikes were on
hand to take the dock lines from skipper
Roberto Avolio (Italy) as she
docked in front of the Catamaran Company
in Nanny Cay. Thanks to Roberto
and crew, Francois (France),
Theresa, (Australia) and
Christoph
(Germany) for taking such good care of
Lucy during her crossing. Mike G.
and Mike V. spent the next few days
unpacking boxes, commissioning the
dinghy, installing the Doyle StackPack
and hanging out at Peg Leg's.
SPECIAL THANKS: To our friend
Mike Ventura
who made the trip to Tortola to help
Mike G prepare Lucy for cruising. Lucy
arrived a couple of days later than
expected, so Mike didn't get to sail as
much as we had hoped. His help is
greatly appreciated.
SPECIAL THANKS: To
Marianne and Didier
of the Catamaran Company for their
patience and support during the turnover
of Lucy in Nanny Cay. We asked a lot of
questions, and these guys were always
helpful and courteous. |

BVI - February 17-20, 2007 |
After picking up Carol in West End,
Tortola, we made our first trip in
Lucy with friend Mike Ventura.
We anchored one night in Great Harbor,
Jost Van Dyke and then in Little Harbor,
JVD after checking in at Cane Garden Bay
for supplies. We made the trek to Foxy's
in Great Harbor for the mandatory hats
and t-shirts and Corsairs on the beach
for the great breakfast. |

|
BVI - February 20-27, 2007 |
After dropping Mike Ventura at
the West End Ferry dock and
simultaneously picking up Carol's
brother Larry (wife Annette), we
spent a week cruising in the BVI. We made
stops in Virgin Gorda including the
Bitter End and the Baths, and also Jost
Van Dyke and Peter Island. Larry and
Annette spent their last night
ashore on Cooper Island before Carol and
I shuttled them to West End to catch
the ferry back to St. Thomas. Beautiful
conditions all week, with occasional
rain and light winds. |

|
BVI - February 27 - March 3, 2007 |
Carol and I spent a week in the BVI
mostly at our Nanny Cay slip taking care
of new owner stuff. We shopped for boat
accessories, organized all of the gear,
dealt with warranty issues and made some
upgrades to the dinghy. Of course, we
also managed to eat at Peg Leg's a
couple of nights and enjoy a few island
drinks along the way. Lucy is about
90% ready to do some serious cruising
and relaxing. During the week, we anchored for 2 nights
in Key Bay, Peter Island, a quiet little
cove with green water and very little
company. |
|
|
BVI - Late March/April 2007 |
Our friends John, Jillian and Caillin
joined us in the BVI for a few days.
They spent most of their time in a
cottage on Virgin Gorda. MORE

BVI - May 2007 |
Carol's sister Debbie got away from her
family for a week and joined us for some
fun. We hit Saba Rock, Foxy's at Jost
Van Dyke, and more.

Brunswick, GA - July - September 2007 |
Trips to Lucy in July, August and
September were mostly spent sitting in
the marina with the AC going. It was a
VERY hot summer. It's been a lot of fun
just hanging out in Brunswick and
checking out the local culture. There is
a small farmer's market, art galleries,
and restaurants all within walking
distance of the boat. We have also met
some other owners of Lagoon 380s in the
marina and we're learning a lot about
the boat. We did manage to take some side
trips on Lucy including trips to
Saint Simons Island, Cumberland Island and Jekyll Island
which are all fairly close by. |

Brunswick, GA to Abacos, Bahamas -
November 2007 |
Along with friends Jeremy Pape and Steve
Burke, we delivered the boat to Marsh
Harbor, Abacos. We left on Monday,
Nov. 5th and arrived in Walker's Cay
(western Abacos) on Wednesday morning,
the 7th after a fairly calm crossing of
the Gulf Stream. We motored inside of
Walker's Cay just ahead of a strong
front that we had been expecting. In a
matter of minutes, the wind went from NW
at 10 knots to NE at 25+ knots.
Fortunately, once we were at Walker's
Cay, we were in the shallower, smoother
waters of the Abacos instead of the big
water that we had just left. We just
dodged THAT bullet. From there, we set
the spinnaker and made great time down
the Abacos chain to Carter's Cay, where
we spent the night. The next day, we
sailed down to Green Turtle Cay where we
fueled up and sampled a local drink
called a Tranquil Turtle. We continued
on to Baker's Bay on the NW corner of
Guana Cay and dropped the hook for the
night. The next morning, Friday, we went
for a swim before making the short trek
to Marsh Harbor.
We docked at the Moorings base at Conch
Inn/Marina where we cleared customs just
in time for Jeremy and Steve to grab a
cab and make their flights. A while
later, a sailboat tied up next to Lucy
with wild stories about getting caught
in the front that we had just missed on
Wednesday. They had left Beaufort, NC
(bound for St. Thomas) the same day that
we left Brunswick, but they got caught
in the frontal passage. They were a
mess. They had broken their boom and
destroyed at least one sail. |

Marsh Harbor, Abacos, Bahamas - November
2007 |
On Monday morning, Nov. 12th, I
delivered Lucy to Marsh Harbor Boat Yard
to have the bottom re-painted. I arrived
at the boat yard at 10:30, and by 11:30,
Lucy was out of the water and the yard
staff was washing and sanding. On
Tuesday, a power catamaran that was
being towed into the boat yard, ran
aground in the channel entrance and
blocked the channel for a couple of
hours (see photos in gallery). It was a
sad story that started several days
before. The owners had just taken
delivery of the AfriCat 42 and were
making their first trip. They ran
aground hard on a reef near Marsh Harbor
and rammed the starboard outdrive up
into the boat causing her to sink. She
was in shallow water, but still sank up
to the fly bridge, swamping the entire
interior. According to the marine
surveyor, the boat will be
declared a total loss. She's currently
sitting right next to Lucy and it's a
sad sight. What a heartbreaker! |
